Kingfisher Step-By-Step

Description

15 steps in the making of my Juvenile Kingfisher digital painting [link]

I used a tablet PC drawing exclusively with the airbrush tool of SketchBook Pro. I used a creative commons reference image. All colouring was by eye, I didn't use palettes but selected and adjusted colours I'd already drawn in the image.

Steps 1 to 3 were sketching.

Steps 4 to 10 were ensuring the proportions and colours were correct, ready to add detail.

Step 7 shows the appearance after the background was drawn in - some white areas turned out not to have been coloured.

Step 10 represents 9 hours of work. At this point the colours and proportions were correct and ready to be refined.

Steps 11 to 15 are adding finer details, including shadows, throughout the image. I started with the head and finished with the branch.

Step 15 is cropped from the finished image.
